I bring my crochet or knit projects to places where I know I have time to work on. One of the place is my friend’s house. I usually bring my WIPs (work in progress) in white tote bag, so whenever I visit her house, her oldest daughter, Emma, brings it over to me, asks me what I’m making now, and watches me while I crochet. It seemed like she’s interested in crochet so I asked her one day… “Emma, do you want to learn crochet?” and her answer was “Yes!” I was so happy to hear that she’s interested in crochet! She’s old enough to learn how to crochet, but I thought it would be best for her to experience and practice yarn craft in a different way!

Craft Using Loopy Yarn – Finger Knitting

Have you seen this super bulky, loopy yarn in craft stores? That’s the yarn I got Emma to try it out. This yarn is used for finger knitting. It does not require a crochet hook or a knitting needles! It is super easy that beginners including kids can do it! Basically the concept is the same as crochet and knit, but all you have to do is put a loop through next loop. Since the yarn is super bulky, it’s really easy to work with. Also, the loops are already made so all the stitches are consistent and your finished look will be neat as experienced crocheter/knitter! There are various loop yarns available and you can shop from the button below!

Here are some patterns for finger knitting!

Off The Hook Yarn by Lion Brand

You know how the kids are…they change their mind often. I could’ve gotten the yarns for Emma, but I wanted her to have the best experience she can get, so I went yarn shopping with her! It was really fun experience for me because I never went to any shopping with just her and myself. I used my friend’s car, which was somewhat scary because Emma and her sister (she wanted to come along too)’s lives were in my hands! I had my car with me so I wanted to take mine and put car seats from her car, but she said she can’t take out the car seat for some reason. Thank God that the store was only 5 minutes away from the house! The girls behaved so well during the ride and in the store, and they seemed they had fun shopping as well!

Without any plans on what she wanted to make, Emma got Off The Hook Magic Yarn in Heart and her sister got Off The Hook Glitz Yarn in Bubblegum (both from Lion Brand Yarn). They both sure like pink! I love how the design appears as you work through with Off The Hook (OTH) Magic Yarn! We got these yarns from JOANN, and unfortunately, OTH Magic Yarn is unavailable on JOANN’s website. If you go in-store, you might find it in clearance section! One of my local JOANN store had boxes full of this yarn! Lion Brand still carries this yarn on their website, so if you like to get other designs besides the heart, check out their website! (You can go from the button below.)

Trial and Error

This was my first time working with loop yarn so I had no idea how to start it. I knew Off The Hook Magic Yarn‘s end result is going to be a square with heart in the middle (as shown on the yarn label) so I could not miscount the initial stitch in the beginning. Usually a pattern is written on back of the label right? I looked for it, but nothing related to construction was written on it. So I Googled and found a tutorial on LB’s YouTube channel! It was very helpful tool and easy to follow along. I believe with the video tutorial, kids can make great finger knitting craft on their own!

Emma was working with her grandma, and I was working with her sister. Her sister was not interested as Emma so she gave up pretty quickly, but Emma worked so hard! She made many mistakes and had to frog here and there, but because the heart design appears as you work along, it was quite easy to catch the mistake. I recommend that when you are done with a row, count each time to make sure you didn’t skip any loops!

With the help of her grandma, she completed! I was so proud of her for not quitting! She even worked on her sister’s so she can make a pillow cover! (Look how happy she is in the photo!) Off The Hook Glitz Yarn did not have enough loops to have the same rows as Off The Hook Magic Yarn. We made a row shorter for the OTH Glitz Yarn, but since it stretches out, it wasn’t a issue when seaming together to make a pillow cover.

Completed Look

Using a similar color yarn, I helped her with seaming the edges to make a pillow cover. Good thing that both girls got pink yarn! It took her a week or two to finish this because she needed the yarn to seam and other stuff and I don’t see her that often, but finger knitting would be perfect weekend craft project you can do with your kids! If you’re searching for a craft idea for your kids, try finger knitting!

Thank you so much for reading and happy yarn crafting!
