As January is ending today, I’m very excited for next month! There’s no major holiday in February, but it’s special month for me because my birthday is coming up! (Actually there are SO many birthdays next month…my sister, bunch of my close friends, as well as favorite baby Ellie! I share my birthday with her!) Birthdays are special, but I’m sure for couples, Valentine’s Day is special for them!

It’s very typical to use heart shape/design for Valentine’s goodies, but it turned out super cute! It’s very simple look, and it brings touch of love to your table.

The coaster size is big enough to put 16oz. mug as well! I don’t drink wine or any alcohol so I don’t own any wine glass and take a picture with the coaster…I know it would be adorable to put your wine glass on top of this coaster and show some love!

I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream for this project, but worsted weight yarn would work as well. I like using cotton yarn over acrylic for coasters because I use them during the summer for cold drinks. Cotton does help suck up water drops on the cup, and my table surface doesn’t get wet!

When doing tapestry design, especially when using 2 contrasting colors, color that you carry over is going to show a little bit no matter what. So in order to cover that up little bit, I decided to use surface stitch technique. It took me couple tries to get the design I liked. I recommend using a color of the heart, surface stitch in between color A and color B. Fun surface stitch videos as well as tutorial video can be found on Repeat Crafter Me YouTube channel!

Also, I learned and used new technique. Check out the below photo for the difference…

Can you tell the difference? Right side is joined with slip stitch, a typical way of joining each round (and carried over the other color for less weaving). Left side is joined by using invisible join technique. (Tutorial on invisible join can be found HERE) This technique gives so much cleaner look than typical slip stitch joining! Down side to this technique is more weaving. I guess if the project requires multiple colors, then this technique would be perfect, but since this coaster only needs 2 colors and color changes 1 round after next, I would rather carry over the yarn and not fastening off each round…Maybe I can both use this technique and carry over yarn if I know how much more yarn I need for next round. Leave a very long long tail so I can invisible join then carry over yarn!

I hope you enjoy this project! Here’s free pattern for Heart Crochet Coaster! (You can purchase nicely formatted PDF at my Etsy shop HERE !)
