I’m sharing with you today is a beginner-friendly plaid design square! This will be my first ever afghan square design, and I’m grateful to be able to collaborate with other amazing designers!

Inspiration

“Home for the Holidays” is the theme we used for the square. When you think of “Home for Holidays”, you think of Christmas tree, green, red, family gathering, etc… I wanted to stay away from Christmas tree, just because it was cliché during this time of the year. So besides the tree, I was thinking what reminds me of “home” and “holidays”. To tie those two words together, I thought a gift and plaid design would go perfect! I see plaid design in many places, and I thought about friends and family gather together and opening up presents. (Check out this adorable family photo of Stephanie from All About Ami wearing plaid pajama!)

Plaid Designs in Crochet

I’ve seen several ways for making a plaid design in crochet. One with using tapestry and intarsia technique (you can read this post about the difference between the two!). Another crochet plaid design is with the combination of surface slip stitch for vertical lines and half double crochet & chain space for horizontal lines. Since the square is 8″ by 8″, I knew I wouldn’t have that many stitches to work with. So I then I thought of surface slip stich would be great to make lines. There are total of 48 ends to weave in, and yes that is a lot of ends, so you can eliminate few lines if like (I cannot guarantee of how it’s going to look though!)

Yarn I Used

Wecrochet, a sister company of Knit Picks, were very kind to provide us with their yarn! The yarn used in this square is called “Mighty Stitch” It’s a blend of 20% superwash wool and 80% acrylic. I never heard of superwash wool so I looked it up what it is, and this came up:

Superwash wool is a special wool product that has been treated or processed in a way that allows it to be machine washable.

THE SPRUCE CRAFTS

I made a knit garment with same fiber contents, except it was with regular wool. Compare to the regular wool, superwash wool is definitely much smoother! My hands were getting warm while making the square, and I can see myself using this yarn again to make a beanie, mittens or any other winter accessories!
