Until I drank so much iced coffee during this summer, I didn’t really realize how convenient the coaster is. I came up with perfect modern coaster that is really easy to make!

Inspiration

Initial thought on my love and desire to make chunky crochet coaster is when I visited my friend in Florida few years ago. We were watching a drama at night, and my friend’s husband handed me a drink with a coaster. Apparently, he hates when the surface gets wet or dirty. So the coaster they were using was a typical cork coaster you see in the market today. It’s nice and thick and no water droplets will be on the surface. It was somewhat new thing for me to use a coaster because my family didn’t use a coaster back then. That led me to my desire of wanting to make chunky crochet coaster someday.

3 strands together = nice and thick stitch

To make a coaster thick, I initially worked with 2 strands together. After making a prototype, I didn’t like it…it seemed slightly thin for me. So then I added another strand. Now that gave me nice chunky look for the stitch. It felt like I was working with bulky weight (category 5) yarn.

Doing a last round of slip stitch sure adds one more fine detail to this coaster. Because this works in continuous round, it will look like a snail shell at first. By weaving in ends, you can reshape it to really close to nice circle.

Pin it now, crochet later!

Plenty of amount to make coasters

I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, which is mercerized cotton so it has a slight sheen to it. You can make 5 coasters with only 1 ball of Cotton 24/7. I love using 24/7 Cotton because of this sheen, clean and smooth look. I love using other cotton yarns as well, but it has slightly that “fuzz” look. It’s also really easy to work with because the yarn is smooth and it won’t get stuck on your hook.

You can divide the yarn into 3 small balls (if you want the specific length, please read the note section on the pattern) or you can get 3 balls of 24/7 Cotton and make 15 coasters. This will be perfect gift idea since it only takes 15 minutes to make! How amazing is that? You can mix the colors as well and create marble-like look.
